Periphery and connected terms

One of the challenges of modern society is the growing polarization of the space under the center-periphery. But official documents don’t contain what the periphery is. An analysis of the scientific literature on the spatial and regional development, leads to the conclusion that there are many points of view on the term of "periphery". The lack of common interpretation of the term is the reason, why the periphery identified with the marginal areas, the province and the outskirts. The article reviews the evolution of the concept of "periphery". The author made an attempt to distinguish "periphery" from "marginal areas", "outskirts" and "province".
