The specifics of the activities of higher education institutions in modern conditions is discussed in the article. The author analyzes a number of criteria that can be used in the process of assessing the social effectiveness of educational institutions. The use of these criteria allows both to identify development trends of a higher education institution and to determine the role that the institution of higher education plays in the life of the society. The proposed list of criteria reflects the specifics of modern society and can be transformed and supplemented in accordance with the directions of social development.
