Currently, diabetes mellitus is becoming a pandemic. An individual predisposition to the onset of diabetes mellitus in an adult is determined not only by genetic characteristics, but also by social factors that determine the conditions of a person's life in childhood – this is the development of a child at an early age, prolonged starvation of the mother during pregnancy and starvation of the child in the first years of life. An analysis of the literature data on the features of the development of diabetes mellitus in people who experienced long periods of starvation in childhood was carried out. It is noted that the risk of developing diabetes mellitus and its early onset increases in people of older age groups if they experienced famine at the stage of intrauterine development or during the first years of life; in addition, the frequent development of diabetes mellitus is more often detected in women who have experienced prolonged starvation in early childhood.
