Peritonitis – inflammation of the leaves of the peritoneum - is an independent nosological form, which is of great importance in emergency surgery, primarily for reasons of high morbidity and mortality. The review article attempts to consider current scientific data on risk factors for the development of various forms of peritonitis, it’s and their epidemiology, as well as describes the most acute problems of diagnosis and prognosis of peritonitis, taking into account modern scientific achievements in the field of surgery.
