Objective: By studying the nerves and blood vessels in the region of the carotid bifurcation in cadavers, we provide a morphological and anatomical basis for the safe and effective performance of carotid endarterectomy.
Methods: We selected the available autopsy materials of 20 cases (40 sides) without definite cardiovascular diseases during their lifetime (11 males and 9 females). The anatomical study of the nerves and blood vessels in the carotid bifurcation region was carried out using carotid endarterectomy, and the morphological and structural characteristics of the vessels and the relationship between the nerves and the blood vessels were investigated.
Results:The bifurcation types of the common carotid artery: type I accounts for 12.5%; type II accounts for 47.5%; type III accounts for 40%. carotid bifurcation height:Above the upper edge of the thyroid cartilage: 55% on the left and 65% on the right;Parallel to the superior border of the thyroid cartilage: 35% on the left and 30% on the right;Below the upper edge of the thyroid cartilage: 10% on the left side and 5% on the right side. The inner diameters of the common carotid artery, internal carotid artery and external carotid artery in males are wider than those in females (P<0.05), and the bifurcation angle of the bilateral carotid arteries is also wider in males than in females (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Anatomical measurements of the nerves and vessels at the carotid bifurcation can not only clarify the relationship between the carotid vessels and nerves, but also provide a morphological basis and anatomical foundation for safe and effective carotid endarterectomy.
