This article examines the history of the development of speech etiquette in China, its main stages, as well as the key moral categories that form the etiquette basis in Chinese society. This article provides a definition of the concept of etiquette, its main characteristics and its role in society. In addition, this article provides the main moral and ethical provisions of the norms of Confucianism and Buddhism, which were the key teachings that influenced the formation of the norms of etiquette in Chinese society. Also, this article briefly examines the course of the history of the development of etiquette in China, affecting the period starting from antiquity to the present day. In the article, the author comes to the conclusion: the development of speech etiquette in China has come a long way of historical development, the beginning of which has been going on since ancient times. Many norms of etiquette were laid down by Confucian and Buddhist teachings, on the basis of which society gradually evolved. The fundamental principles on which Chinese etiquette was based are li, xiao, and respect for elders.
