The main objective of this article is to analyze the phenomenon of psychalgia (acute mental pain). Including philosophy data into the analysis of psychalgia makes it possible to reveal the causes of mental pain rooted in the peculiarities of the European mentality. A method of searching here is the comparative analysis where the European and the Buddhist-Taoist types of mentality are compared. The choice of the method is stipulated by statistical data: the level of psychalgia (which can be judged by the number of registered depression and suicide cases per a certain amount of population) in Europe is much higher than that in China. The ongoing comparison of the two types of mentalities reveals differences in the assessment of the spatial, temporal and social conditions of one's existence. The analysis of this difference, in its turn, leads to the identification of those features of the European mentality that affect the degree of psychalgia.
Keywords:psychhalgia, mentality, finalism, teleologism, time.
