The article is devoted to the analysis of the formation of ideas about the essence of creativity from antiquity to the present day. The characteristics of the main stages in the formation of the concept of “creativity” are given. If at the initial stages creativity had a sacred character and was considered as a divine phenomenon of the transition from non-existence to being, then in the Middle Ages it begins to be interpreted as a divine gift to man and the possibility of man’s atonement for his sin. In modern times, it is considered as a connecting link between the world of nature and the world of spirit, that is, as a spiritual principle and the internal state of the subject of creativity. The article provides an analysis of the views on the work of domestic psychologists and philosophers G. Skovoroda, N. Fedorov, S.L. Frank, N. Berdyaev, V. Solovyov. Much attention is paid to the analysis of interpretations of “creativity” in the works of I. Kant and Hegel, Nietzsche, A. Bergson, neo-Kantians, and also characterizes the ideas on the phenomenon of creativity of modernists and postmodernists. The article ends with an analysis of modern ideas of modern ideas of Russian philosophers on “creativity”.
