LEXICAL INFLATION" AND THE WEAKENING OF STYLISTIC MARKING IN SUBSTANDARD VOCABULARY

Su Mingze   (Graduate student Moscow State University, named after M. V. Lomonosov )

This article examines the concept of "lexical inflation," drawing an analogy between the weakening of stylistic marking in words and economic inflation. The study aims to demonstrate the inaccuracy of the term "linguistic inflation" and to explain the reasons behind changes in the stylistic characteristics of vocabulary. The research employs a comparative analysis of lexicological and economic processes, alongside methodological approaches to studying stylistic changes in language. The findings are applicable to linguistics, particularly in stylistics, sociolinguistics, and semantics. The novelty of this study lies in reinterpreting the concept of "lexical inflation" through the dynamics of the stylistic characteristics of vocabulary. The conclusions confirm that changes in language arise from the pursuit of more expressive forms of communication. The weakening of stylistic marking in substandard vocabulary is attributed not to an overall expansion of the lexicon but to competition between new and existing expressions, leading to a redistribution of words along the stylistic marking spectrum. This process occurs both within the substandard register and between substandard and neutral styles, reflecting natural linguistic evolution.

Keywords:lexical inflation, substandard vocabulary, emotional marking, emotional expressiveness, profane words.
