Patronage in Russian bureaucratic milieu at the sec- ond half of XIX - beginning of XX centuries

The paper discusses the phenomenon of patron-client relationship and social exchange in Russian bureaucratic milieu. Studying complex of support letters, author argues that procedures of patronage became more complicated due to growing legal consciences of Russian society. Patrons tried to find additional arguments in order to substantiate their clients’ claims on vacancies, subsidies and awards.
