Cultural factors in scientific and technical translation

The paper deals with cultural peculiarities of scientific and technical discourse on different linguistic levels. It is the case study of scientific and technical texts and their translations in English and Russian published in Russian and foreign journals. The paper attempts to challenge the view that scientific and technical discourse is free from cultural factors and to prove that culture in scientific and technical texts is no less important than in other types of texts. Translators of technical texts should take into account cultural differences between source and target languages and level them out using translation shifts.
