European influence on Thai traditional theatre in the beginning of the 20th century

The article deals with the transformation of Thai traditional theater lakhon. The reign of King Chulalongkorn is the important turning point in the modernization of Thai dance-drama. In the beginning of the 20th century the evolution of Thai theatre was influenced by European theatre. The features of new drama and its main differences from the traditional theater are analyzed in this article. It is shown that the development and reformation of traditional theater facilitated the transition of Thai theatrical art to a new era and the foundation of the modern Thai theatre.
