The article examines the state of the Orthodox clergy during the 1891–1892 famine in provincial administrations of the Central Black Earth Region of Russia. The author, based on published and unpublished sources, also analyzes the activity of the Orthodox clergy and church officers aimed at the recovery from the food crisis. It is concluded that the vigorous public service of the rural clergy contributed to the recovery from social and economic crises in Russian Empire.
