The article aims to reveal a problem of teaching a foreign-language written discourse as a problem of intercultural communicative activity within the framework of language teaching. The authors pay special attention to cultural linguistics as a scientific field which explains laws of language development in cultural context. Cultural linguistics studies language as a phenomenon of culture determined by development of society and human history and which contributes to the understanding of ethnic mentalities. Foreign-language correspondence discourse is shown not as a simple information exchange but as a dialogue of cultures. The work focuses on the linguocultural peculiarities of the Russian, British and American business correspondence discourse and conditions necessary for escaping communicative failures in foreign-language discourse.
The initial thesis of the article states that educational potential of cultural linguistics is considered in the terms of creating knowledge for successful cross-cultural interaction. The choice of communicative strategy in written foreign-language discourse should take into account cultural values. Discourse competence building requires not only knowledge of a codified language system, traditional national culture but also taking into consideration modern social processes and attitudes in society.
