The article discusses the contribution of the famous Russian orientalist of the XIX century V.V. Velyaminov-Zernov (1830–1904) in the study of the history of the Kazan khanate. The authors conducted a comparative analysis of the views of a scientist on some problems of history of the Kazan khanate, presented in his 4-volume "Study of Kasimov kings and princes" (1863–1887). It is revealed that V.V. Velyaminov-Zernov believed the khanate of Kazan heir of the Golden Horde, relations between Kasimov and Kazan rulers the struggle for Kazan throne. The fall of Kazan (1552), scientist, explained the fragmentation of the Tatars, Kazan split within the political elite and the strengthening of the Moscow state.
