The article is devoted to a comprehensive study of the first monument of Yakut literature - an essay "Memoirs" by Afanasy Uvarovsky. Particular attention is paid to the first half of the essay, where the author managed to convey a complex inner world of a man, his perception of the surrounding reality. It was revealed that the protagonist of the work bears the traditional Orthodox ideal of the defender. It is noted that emotional lyrical digressions and various methods of artistic depiction of natural phenomena in the work contribute to portrayal of the inner world and psychological state of the character. Another characteristic feature of the work of Uvarovsky is a full coverage of various aspects of life of the Yakut society, serious attention to the unique culture of the people. The article supposes that Uvarovsky was familiar with works of representatives of the "natural school" and authors of the "physiological essay" which contributed to the creation of his own essay, truthful, sincere and passionate to the destiny of his people.
