The article examines the process of geographical objects’ naming, which apart from linguistic, also includes ethnographic, historical, sociological and literary components. The totality of these components helps the linguist to distinguish the specificity of the named objects and the traditions associated with their naming. The research is based on the position that any names contain cultural and historical information and reflect the peculiarities of the people's mentality. The article presents a comparative analysis of subway station's names in Moscow, Paris and London. The choice of these cities is conditioned by the opinion that people who belong to different cultures, territories, the onomastic space has a largely different content. The author determines common regularities of naming as well as the peculiarities of Russian, French and English mentality under the lens of the subway stations.
