The article considers the chronology of the military operation of German and Ukrainian armies at the Isthmuses of Perekop and Chongar and in the Crimea, which led to the capturing and occupation of Taurida and the peninsula on April 1918 by the forces of German Imperial Army and its allies. In 1920-2000s Ukrainian historiography and partially repeating after it Russian one persistently put thoughts about the active participation and the major role of the Ukrainian forces in capturing the Crimea by Germans on April-May 1918. However, according to the author, this point of view is not just a mistake, but an outright falsification. Ukrainian memoirists and historians used this “fact” to prove their claims for the Crimea as its liberators from Bolsheviks while Soviet ones used it as a regular accusation against the Ukrainian nationalism of aiding the German occupants. In this work, based on the analysis of a wide circle of historical sources, memoires of the direct participators of those events, including not published before archive documents, the insignificant role of Ukrainian forces in capturing the Crimea is being proved. However, the strong psychological influence of given contingent onto the local population of the peninsula and red troops, who perceived them as the anti-Bolsheviks voluntary army of one of the Russian Empire parts, is being noted.
