The article deals with the changes in organization, objectives, techniques, teaching and learning materials in foreign language teaching to post graduate students of the financial and economic universities on the example of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation. These changes result from the adoption of new educational standards aimed at modernizing the system of postgraduate training. The authors use general scientific methods of cognition: analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, comparison, observation and generalization.
The article shows that a modern group of post graduate students is a mixed ability group with all its differences. This calls for special teaching methods for not only getting postgraduates prepared for the foreign language exam but also equipping them with universal and professional competences required by new educational standards. Among these methods are: differentiating techniques; inverted class; integrated learning; scaffolding; ICT and testing technologies. A special focus is made on choosing and grading teaching and learning materials for in-class and autonomous work. The authors give examples of which materials to use and how to adopt them to meet the needs of students with different language ability. In conclusion the article provides recommendations on foreign language teaching and managing a heterogeneous post graduate group.
