The article delves into the poetics of childhood in the prose of Elfriede Jelinek of the 1970-80s. It is established that Jelinek develops a special «anti-child» language, in which childhood loses its importance and value. Jelinek destroys the myth of happy childhood and joyful motherhood through the image of children-toys: children lose personal qualities and individual traits and become tools of social recognition, mercantile goals achievement and a means to fulfill their parents' ambitions.
Keywords:E. Jelinek, Austrian literature, childhood, children-toys, code, discourse, social infantilism.
