the article presents methodological developments on moral and ethical evaluation of the act of a literary hero on the example of studying the work of A. P. Chekhov in high school. Experimental work was carried out in schools of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). It is assumed that the study of the monographic theme "AP Chekhov" in the 10th grade on the basis of the axiological approach will be effective in the value self-determination of the student's personality, if the leading tool for the study of works of art is the moral and ethical evaluation of the act, which occurs through the establishment of "architectonic points", the assessment of responsibility in the unity of bilateral responsibility, the definition of the value contexts of the hero.
