The object of the study is the language units, which are defined as fashionable in modern Russian and Chinese. The article focuses on the main changes in various areas of Russian and Chinese society, which are expressed in catchwords. The common features and differences between catchwords in two languages are revealed from the point of view of semantics, etymology and functioning in speech. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that the phenomenon of catchwords is described for the first time, catchwords in morden Russian and Chinese are analyzed on different social topics, the main reasons for the similarities and differences in the development of catchwords in these two linguistic cultures are analyzed.
