the article deals with the prospects of using the qualimetric approach in education, in particular, for the diagnosis of students ' readiness to study technical disciplines in the master's program. The problem of assessing the quality of education in the context of the competence approach is not solved without the tools of objective measurements. As a result of the theoretical analysis of the work, it can be concluded that the most effective tool for diagnosing the formation of a number of competencies of graduates is a heterogeneous criterion-oriented test. In the existing research on the methodology of such tests, the issues of determining their content area are least worked out. The purpose of this article is, first of all, in the development of qualimetrically based algorithm of technology of diagnostics of the initial level of competence in the system of bachelor's and master's degrees. The paper proposes a method of determining the content of the test area to assess the formation of the initial level of professional competence of masters in the direction of "Agroengineering" on the basis of thesaurus approach. Descriptors with the highest ratings can be used in the development of individual tasks for self-work of students to eliminate gaps in the formation of competencies at the undergraduate level; in the organization of differentiated training of students at the master's level.
