A discussion of the problems of teaching history and social sciences in the journal “Marxist-historian” in 1928

In the conditions of modernization in the teaching of social science and history in the Russian Federation with an emphasis on the educational and patriotic aspect, it is necessary to study its formation and development in the Soviet school. The search for the most effective means and methods of forming a historical and social science worldview of students in the context of a variety of information requires understanding the positive and negative experience of the Soviet education system. This article examines the issues that were raised in the publications of the leading Soviet historical journal "Marxist Historian" for 1928. After a wide discussion held in 1927, a separate section appears on the pages of the journal devoted to the teaching of social studies and history, in which a serious discussion of the problems of teaching these disciplines continues. The formation of social science teaching in the Soviet Union in the 1920s took place in four stages and by 1928 textbooks were published, the contents of which caused serious objections from the magazine’s staff. Didactic and educational materials on social studies could not replace the full teaching of social-humanitarian and historical disciplines in grades 5-7. Therefore, on the pages of the magazine the question was again raised about the need to return the teaching of history to school. Article materials may be useful for researchers of the history of pedagogy in the USSR.
