The article analyzes speech absurdity as a product of conscious speech-generating activity and substantiates an approach to speech absurdity as a peripheral potential of the language system, which is realized in special discursive contexts. An absurd statement always retains a close connection with the language system, since it is built from its elements (words, morphemes, phonemes) and is a consciously constructed statement, and in the language system itself, factors can hardly be found that absolutely prevent the appearance of absurd expressions and statements. Discursive factors, that is, the inconsistency of absurd statements with typical, natural communicative tasks (transmission of information, expression of thoughts, emotions, etc.), play an obstacle role. As a result, the traditional concept of absurdity as a deviation is complemented by the concept of absurdity as a realization of the peripheral potentialities of the language system, which becomes possible in special discursive-pragmatic contexts.
