The article is dedicated to the semantic analysis of onomatopoetic words of Lezgin language, to associative links formed between onomatopoeia and sounds of the environment. Cases of the polysemanticity of onomatopoetic words occurring due to the expansion of the meaning on the basis of sound associations, examples of metaphorical transfers, cases of acquisition of emotional meaning by onomatopoetic words, variants of synonymy, including the synonymy of verbs of onomatopoetic origin, were analyzed. So-called “author’s” onomatopoetic words, as well as complex onomatopoetic word formations connected with intonation, were discussed in the paper. The results of the study may be used in the course of preparation of specialized courses studying the issue of the link between the sound and the meaning, as well as in the theory and practice of making Lezgin language dictionaries.
