The article examines the problem of researching the works of L.N. Tolstoy in terms of their linguistic content, as a phenomenon of language and culture, reflecting the national language picture of the world of Russian speakers of the 19th. The example of the analysis of the story «Metel»/«Snowstorm» reveals and commented on specific information - ideas, concepts and realities, reflecting Russian culture of that time. Contextual examples of linguocultural, phraseological units of different structures are given, including dialectal expressions that require additional interpretation not only for foreign-speaking, but also for Russian readers. In separate subgroups, examples of grammatical and stylistic levels are distinguished, details of the story, characterizing the pictures of everyday life of the people are described. The author's proposed order of linguocultural interpretation of the literary text can serve as a means of organizing the cognitive activities of foreign-language students/readers, while at the same time acting as a tool for understanding the meaning of the literary text of L.N. Tolstoy.
