The article analyzes the last story of Yu.Dombrovsky, whose work has not yet been sufficiently studied in literary studies. The story "Pen, leg, cucumber" is considered as the final one in the author's solution of the problem of the relationship between reality and the text.
The novelty of the research is also expressed in the fact that a special type of character is at the center of the analysis study – "the person after the written".
The biographical, structural and cultural-historical research methods used in the article allow analyzing the poetics of the story, firstly, through the prism of a single Dombrovsky text, and secondly, to explain the ways of organizing the artistic world of the story by the general cultural context of Russian literature of the twentieth century.
As a result of the study, it was revealed that in the story "Pen, leg, cucumber", a relationship most reminiscent of existential is established between a socially determined, realistic, character and reality. In a situation of defeat, the character – writer, who has completed his creative path and is at the end of his physical life, renounces the idea of pan-semiotic immortality, rebels against the texts he previously created. Within the literature of existential realism, ideologems of postmodernism are emerging, which in the poetics of the story is manifested in the author's use of formal methods of text organization specific to postmodernism.
