In this paper, an attempt is made to analyze English phraseological units with zoonym components on cultural and philosophical grounds. The authors of the article, resorting to the concept of anthropodicy, formulated by N.A. Berdyaev, come to the conclusion that zoomorphic images, sounding in idiomatic expressions, make it possible to state the negative qualities of human characters, while avoiding the stigmatization of the described persons. This effect is achieved due to the fact that these phraseological units accentuate the negative manifestations of human nature as predominantly feral, bestial.
Keywords:phraseological units, idioms, zoonyms, zoosemisms, zoomorphic images, anthropodicy
