The purpose of this study is to analyze the Chinese modal verb 要 yào as a lexical means for expressing modality in terms of the peculiarities of different communicative situations. In addition, we analyze the translation variants that fully express the corresponding modal meanings in Russian. As a result of the study, the detailed use of the verb is reflected in four points: first, the verb 要yào expresses the desire to do something, in this situation the words "want", "wish", "ask", etc. are used in translation into Russian; second, the verb 要yào means that something should be done, in this situation these words of "should", "must", "need", are used in translation into Russian. In the third, the verb 要yào indicates that something is about to happen, in this situation, the translation into Russian uses expressions corresponding to the original; in the fourth, the verb 要yào has the meaning of evaluation and is used in a comparative context, in this situation, the translation into Russian uses comparative adjectives. The demand for the study of the Chinese modal verb要yào lies in its high frequency of use in speech and usefulness for comprehending Chinese modal verbs and studying their translation, as well as in stimulating more interest in this field of research.
