The article analyzes the change in the social status of the dean of the faculty of the university. The dynamics of the functions of managing the educational process is analyzed in connection with changes in the fundamental foundations of the functioning of the structure of higher education. It is shown that, despite the conservative nature of the education system, management functions change in response to the challenges of the time. The appearance in the education system of an object whose predisposition to obtaining fundamental knowledge is not obvious, including for itself, reformats the spectrum of functions of deans from formalized approaches to informal practices. There is a radical change in the motivational field of modern students, a change in the nature of the relationship between private participants in the educational process, the imperative style in today's conditions is not effective. There is a violation of harmony between formal and informal practices in the activities of the managerial level and a shift in emphasis towards individual approaches. The leading function is the social-perceptual function, which requires special psychological training of deans, carried out as part of advanced training. The functionality of the work of deans in modern conditions is a dynamic set of parameters interacting with each other. The requirement of the time is the creation of a dialogue of a special type, which helps students to realize the importance and significance of the period of study for the future life.
