This article considers the ways of translating the nouns denoting close relatives (mother, father) from Russian into English. The aim of the study is to determine the main patterns in the translation of these nominations in A.P. Chekhov’s play “The Seagull” into English. The scientific novelty of the research lies in carrying out a comparative study of nine translations of the play into English (in the period from 1909 to 2015), which allows us to trace the main translation trends of the last century. In the course of the study, the author identified 52 cases of A.P. Chekhov’s use of nouns mother / father and words derived from them (diminutive, pejorative, colloquial), considered options for their translation into English, conducted a comparative analysis of nominations.
