The article deals with some modern English idioms with the word “penny”. Idioms with lexical units related to “money” vocabulary are of great interest to English learners, since money has always been an integral part of people's lives. The authors point out the etymology of the word “penny”, indicate the main semes actualized by this lexical unit, as well as the structures in which it is used. The authors come to the conclusion that it is necessary to thoroughly study idioms in the target language in order to enrich speech and better understand native speakers.
