The article is devoted to the stylistic analysis of metonymy and metaphor in the works of V. Columbus, the famous Mari poet. The author has a keen perception of the semantics of the lexical richness of the Mari language.
The purpose of the study is to identify the features of the use of metaphorical and metonymic expressions. Attention is also paid to synecdoche, as a type of metonymy based on contiguity, and its stylistic features of use.
To achieve this goal, comparative and descriptive research methods were used to help analyze stylistically colored and neutral means of language, as well as the functions they perform in speech.
V. Columbus used metonymy to designate content through the containing, to express the whole through its part, using vocabulary to denote clothing, objects associated with tools, describing the character of a person, revealing more accurately the image of the characters. In his works there are many metaphorical expressions reflecting similarities in the designation of an action or object, and the poet also created individual metaphors.
Metaphor, like metonymy, allows you to make the poet’s speech more figurative, add brightness, and also concentrate the reader’s attention on various nuances that the author wants to emphasize.
