The article reconstructs a fragment of the linguistic picture of the world, represented in the names of cattle in Sanskrit and ancient Greek. The reconstruction is carried out by identifying the internal form of some ancient Greek and Sanskrit lexical units with the meaning ‘Bos taurus LINNAEUS’ (cattle). The research is based on a number of examples of these lexemes in original texts, such as Aesopica, Homer’s Iliad, and the Rig Veda. The conclusions drawn in the article say that cattle is the most important concept in both the ancient Indian and ancient Greek linguistic pictures of the world; however, there are also significant differences in the meanings of this concept for both cultures.
Keywords:nomination, ancient Greek, Sanskrit, linguistic picture of the world, concept of “cattle”.
