The relevance of the problem studied is determined by the fact that today it is the level of education which determines decisively the place of each people, each country in the world community. Therefore, the development of education in general and historical, in particular, its modernization is one of the key problems of the development of modern Russian society. The article aims to analyze trends in the development of the educational and methodological basis of historical education by using the example of coverage of the history of the First World War in Soviet and Russian textbooks designed for students of non-historical specialties. The article’s materials can be useful in modern public discussions about the place of a history textbook in Russia’s multicultural educational space, as well as when writing new textbooks.
