The article analyzes the formation and presentation of the images of the "foreign" and "alien" in the context of the First World War. Through the prism of the content of the popular Russian illustrated magazine "Niva" the article examines how the editorial policy and journalism of the magazine reflected the changes in public consciousness caused by the war. The main attention is paid to how "Niva" constructed the images of the enemy and representatives of other nations, as well as how these images contributed to the formation of patriotic sentiments and national identity. The text materials published in the magazine are examined, negative stereotypes about the "foreign" are analyzed. The study of the images of the "foreign" and "alien" on the pages of the magazine "Niva" during the First World War allows us to see how the wartime periodical press shaped public consciousness and national identity in the context of wartime. The magazine became not only a reflection of current political and social sentiments, but also an active participant in the creation of the image of the "foreign" / "enemy". The image of the "foreign" was often used in describing military operations, which contributed to the formation of antipathy towards the enemy. We can argue that the media, in this case the Niva magazine, played a key role in shaping social and cultural representations that had a significant impact on the perception of the war. The study of these images not only helps to better understand the historical contexts, but also allows us to comprehend the mechanisms of identity formation in the context of conflict, which remains relevant in modern society. In conclusion, it is important to note that the legacy left by such publications continues to influence the perception of the “foreign” and “alien” in the modern world, emphasizing the need for a critical analysis of media narratives in any historical and political context.
