The modern world is moving towards radicalization of international political relations. New blocs and alliances are being formed, international sanctions and national tariffs are actively used as a punitive instrument, active militarization is underway, chronic conflicts are flaring up with renewed vigor, and new regions, along which their geopolitical and geoeconomic interests are splitting, are becoming the space for confrontation between world powers. In this context, the conflict in Western Sahara is of interest for study, which, since its outbreak in the 1960s, has become latent and demonstrates the line of division in the post-colonial space, passing between pro-Western Morocco and pro-Soviet Algeria. Despite the fact that Morocco has established its control over most of the disputed territory by now, the annexation of Western Sahara is not legitimate from the point of view of international law. Algeria, in turn, does not recognize the existing state of affairs, which deepens its confrontation with its neighboring state. Overall, understanding such a complex and explosive situation, which could become a “trigger” for war in the Maghreb, is extremely important in the current context, when the United States and Spain recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, while Russia, China and the majority of the UN General Assembly are categorically against it.
