the article presents some theoretical and practical aspects of the problem of forming the readiness of convicts for socially useful work in places of deprivation of liberty, as well as the results of an experimental study of the psychological and pedagogical foundations of moral self-awareness of convicts in the process of labor education. The purpose of the study was: to identify the determination of the readiness of convicts for socially useful work; to determine the structure of the formation of the readiness of convicts for industrial activity.
To conduct the study, a questionnaire method was chosen, in which 140 convicts who were in the correctional institution of the Federal Penitentiary Institution IK-5 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Tula region participated. All the crimes of the convicts were of a recidivist nature.
As a result of the study, it was found that the readiness of convicts for socially useful work is a purposeful, controlled process and the result of mastering special professional knowledge, skills, as well as the development of personal qualities that contribute to the effective impact on the correction of convicts.
The structure of convicts' readiness for socially useful consists of three elements: psychological readiness (expressed in the need to work successfully, the presence of interest in industrial work, strong-willed qualities necessary in work); practical readiness (implies the availability of industrial knowledge, skills and experience necessary for effective and successful work during the period of serving a sentence); moral readiness (it is an awareness of the social and personal value of work, a formed positive attitude towards it and the ability to work, taking into account its ethical and moral components that contribute to the correction and re-socialization of convicts in the process of execution of punishment).
