The relevance of this article is due to the constant development of information and communication technologies, the universal availability of the Internet and the active process of digitalization of the education system. It reveals the essence and features of the functioning of some educational platforms that are popular in the Russian market – "Moodle" and "GetCourse". The author makes a comparative analysis of the potential of their use in the process of teaching a foreign language. Special attention is paid to such functions of educational portals as the ability to communicate with other participants of the educational process, adaptation to specific learning objectives, etc. The two platforms are different from each other. Both platforms are strikingly different from each other, nevertheless they fulfill a single function - involvement of students in the active educational process by viewing multimedia and interactive materials, interaction with Internet resources and communication with other students.
